Breaking The Code is a 2014 Australian miniseries created and produced by Shelley Birse. The series begins with the murder of an innocent teenager in a remote Australian village. Her friend runs to his teacher, covered in blood, but lacking any real memory of the event. Enter a journalist and his computer hacking brother and a bit of iphone video that leads them into a worm hole of politics and deceit.
The brothers have a complex, knotted relationship and a long history of being locked into set roles. Together, they uncover a terrible conspiracy and nearly lose one another in the process. If you’re looking for smart writing, a bit of Lucy Lawless (she still rocks it out even without her Zena costume) and Aden Young (whom I adore), thrilling action, and a thoughtful and timely mystery that peers intently into the mechanisms of power, greed, and the use, misuse, and abuse of technology, then take six hours to watch these six episodes. It’s currently streaming on Netflix and is definitely worth a watch.
